What are Zones of Regulation?

A Zones of Regulation keyring is a visual, portable tool used to help children identify their emotional state and select calming strategies.

Users flip to the color representing their current mood to communicate feelings, then use suggested coping techniques to return to the Green zone.

How to Use the Keyring
    • Identify the Zone: Regularly ask the child to look at the keyring and pick the color that matches their current feelings.
    • Communicate Feelings: The child points to or flips to the corresponding disc, allowing them to express emotions without needing verbal communication.
    • Apply Strategies: Use the tools suggested on the specific zone card (e.g., deep breathing for Red, taking a break for Yellow) to manage emotions.
    • Transition to Green: Use the tool to help move from a high-energy or low-energy state back to the calm and ready-to-learn "Green Zone". [1, 2, 3, 4]

Effective Usage Scenarios
    • Morning Check-ins: Teachers or parents can use it to gauge a child's mood to start the day.
    • Calm Corner/Time-out: A child can use it to signal when they feel ready to re-engage after a difficult moment.
    • On-the-go Support: Attached to backpacks for school, therapy sessions, or stressful outings.
    • Conflict Resolution: Helps children involved in disagreements to identify their feelings, improving communication. [1, 2]
